Uber driver from Ventura involved in Goleta crash that killed student

GOLETA - A 19-year-old foreign student living in Santa Barbara died Friday after a vehicle collision involving an Uber driver from Ventura, authorities said.

The collision occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. when a crossover sport utility vehicle and a sedan both entered the intersection of Storke Road and Hollister Avenue in Goleta.

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s officials said the sedan had been traveling north on Storke at the time of the collision, while the SUV was traveling west on Hollister.

The incident is under investigation by the sheriff’s major accident response team, and authorities are trying to determine which vehicle ran a red light.

The SUV was driven by the Ventura Uber driver and occupied by a 19-yearold woman and 18-year-old man, both foreign students living in Santa Barbara, according to authorities.

Neither passenger was wearing a seat belt and the woman was thrown from the vehicle, authorities said.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, authorities said.The 18year-old man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The 24-year-old female driver of the sedan, a Riverside resident, and her two passengers, a 16-year-old female from Riverside and a 19-year-old male from Los Angeles, suffered minor or no injuries.

The identification of the 19-year-old victim was pending next-of-kin notification as of Friday.
