Uber's Range in Asheville

My wife and I are looking at moving to Asheville but one of the drivers told us that Uber has a relatively short range from downtown. Does Uber serve Reynolds Mountain, Falcon Ridge, Poplar Ridge and Town Mountain Preserve?

Drivers would love to TAKE you to those places FROM downtown- the further the better. But it's unlikely you'll get a ride from the sticks if no one is in those areas.

I think your original driver was exaggerating just a tad. Three of the places that you mentioned (not familiar with Poplar Village) should have zero issue requesting a ride unless it is a very slow time and the online driver number is low. As a driver, I actually will avoid some days due to there being too many drivers on the road and not enough demand yet. This summer I've probably driven more tourists more used to Uber than locals, haha.

Basically, draw a circle with a 5 mile radius around Asheville and you should almost always be able to get an Uber. You may have to pay a 1.5 surge possibly to attract a driver to your area depending on where the available drivers are. For reference, I have gotten pickup requests in N. Asheville for Weaverville, at Biltmore Park for Sierra Nevada down by the airport, and E. Asheville for Black Mountain. Places any further out like Waynesville or Mars Hill are typically too far out to ever reliably request a ride. The only exception to this is Hendersonville which I occasionally see surge on the map. I do not work that area though, so I cannot say for sure.

As an aside, are you looking to build at Town Mountain Preserve (formerly Bertram's Walk)? I only ask because it was only like 15% developed the last time I checked.

This is very helpful, mrpjfresh. The other community is Poplar Ridge.

Yes, I am looking in Town Mountain Preserve, thanks for the heads up on it's percentage of development.

I live in Reynolds, so yes for my area.

Live in Haywood County and twice in the last week had my phone on, just for grins. Got a "hit" at 1:00 A.M., last Thursday, to take a guy on $4.00 ride to his hotel...dude was so grateful, he gave me a $20. Yesterday afternoon, sitting in my sleep shorts and tee shirt, working on this infernal machine, the phone went off again. So I scurried into acceptable attire and this time, drove from Waynesville to the airport. Small tip, and only a $30.00 ride for an hour RT and 70 miles...BTW...I always fly stealth mode in and out of AVL and pretend pax are long lost relatives during pick-up and drop off.
Saw three UBER drivers parked in the lower lot on my way out. They either have pre-arranged pickups (yeah, that's fair) or they're woefully optimistic. Now I'm waiting at home for a trip to the casino...I am definitely woefully optimistic.
UBER has got to realize they have minimized and diminished the value of their service by lowering the prices and putting the driver in a negative cash flow situation. Usually drive into Asheville on weekends for the typical 10-12 hour nights. I will definitely keep the phone on at home from now on.
Every rider I speak with has 4 things in common: 1) a credit card 2) enjoy timely pick-ups 3) like a clean car and sober driver and 4) (and most importantly) recognize the value of UBER vs. a DWI. We could get $2.00 a mile in this town and NOBODY would complain. There's no competition for what we have to offer and our passengers would rather pay the reasonable fare than the $5000-$15000 DWI fees.
I'm done ranting for now...except for this: you newbies...show a little courtesy when you're at the curb. Put on your flashers and get the hell out of the road as much as possible. You give the pros a bad name.

For Uber, my acceptable attire are three-day-old gym shorts and a wife-beater. I agree, people are willing to pay more - but drivers won't see it. Uber is the most greedy scumbag company out there. I tell all my Uber scum to use Lyft instead.

Wear what you want...there is no Lyft in Asheville , NC and I think there's been collusion to keep Lyft out of A'ville.

Hey, so finally there is another driver in town. I do know that the app range is more than 5 miles. I have had people in Asheville reach me all
the way in Waynesville. or Maggie valley to Waynesville.
