Harbir Parmar, 24, of Howard Beach, Queens, was charged with kidnapping and wire fraud.CreditNew York Federal Bureau of Investigation

The woman called an Uber car in Manhattan late one night in February to take her home to the nearby suburb of White Plains, N.Y. She was exhausted and fell asleep in the back seat.

She woke to discover that the car had stopped and the driver was in the back seat with her, his hand under her shirt, touching her breast, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. The woman reached for her cellphone to call for help, but the driver grabbed it from her.

He eventually left her on the side of Interstate 95 near New Haven, Conn., prosecutors said. Her credit card was later charged $1,047.55 for a trip to Massachusetts.

The driver, Harbir Parmar, 24, of Howard Beach, Queens, was arrested Tuesday and charged with kidnapping and wire fraud, the government said. If convicted of the kidnapping charge, he could face life in prison. (Mr. Parmar did not face a charge related to the alleged touching.)

Do you see any family resemblance?

The funny thing is that this was a nyc TLC driver and has more strict background checks and even drug tests drivers

Mr. Parmar had held a T.L.C. license since December 2015.

I'm sure back in 2015 the NYC taxi Commission was "coerced" by Uber into allowing many drivers to slip through the cracks of vetting.

What a weird story. The guy had his TLC license since 2015 and then just decided to lose his mind because of this particular rider. He, what, waited over 2 years for the perfect opportunity to feel some booby? Did he forget how the app works and keeps track of everything? What possessed him to change the address in his app to Massachusetts? It just makes no sense to me.

The kidnapping angle is interesting for others driving rideshare. Be careful with 3rd party rides and transporting extremely drunk or incapacitated riders that could be considered against their will after the fact. Just another reason to refuse dump jobs.

Uber said:
“What’s been reported is horrible and something no person should go through,” the company said. “As soon as we became aware, we immediately removed this individual’s access to the platform.”
If Uber had a greatest hits album, this would surely be the first tune on it.
