Uber driver charged with giving 'nips' to girls, 13 and 15

PEABODY — An Uber driver has been charged with giving "nip" bottles of vodka to two teenage Peabody girls he was driving to the mall last October.

Pisith Kanh, 22, of Lynn, admitted that the girls — who were 13 and 15 years old at the time — "looked young," but that he gave them the nips anyway, according to a police report.

The Oct. 28 incident came to light two days later, after Cara Murtagh, the assistant superintendent of the Peabody school district, was shown an Instagram video by a housemaster at Peabody's Higgins Middle School.

The video showed the 13-year-old seventh-grader with a Smirnoff vodka bottle. A caption read "(Expletive) Uber gave us nips."

Police then spoke to the girl and her father and learned that she and her friend, 15, had taken an Uber to the Assembly Row shopping center in Somerville that evening.

She told police that the driver asked if they were "thirsty," then pulled two nips from a case in his center console and handed them to the older girl, who was sitting next to him, in the front passenger seat. She handed one of the bottles to the younger girl, police said.

Police confirmed the identity of the driver and interviewed him at his Lynn apartment.

Kanh initially denied giving the girls alcohol, but when asked why they would say he had, he confirmed the girls' account.

Kanh was sent a summons to appear in Peabody District Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of providing alcohol to a minor at his arraignment.

His attorney, James Craig, said there was no argument over the conditions requested by a prosecutor and set by Judge James Barretto.

Barretto released Kanh on personal recognizance, with conditions that include no contact with the girls or any children under 18 — and no driving for Uber or Lyft.

A pre-trial conference is scheduled for April 24.

An emailed request for comment from Uber was not returned by Tuesday's Salem News press deadline.

"Lynn, Lynn, the City of Sin, you never come out, the way you go in."

I see that with this guy, Lynn is earning its nickname, "The City of Sin".

That is Essex County, Massachusetts. I am originally from there. That little rhyme about Lynn goes back at least to the 1930s, if not before.
I even lived in Lynn, once. A centerfold model of a certain men's magazine is from Lynn. When her career wound down, she wound up back there and now does tarot readings.

At one point, Lynn was in a contest with Chelsea and Holyoke for the title of "Arson Queen City of Massachusetts".

Back in the day, train conductors used to walk through the cars to announce the stops. Some of them had a singsong style. There was this one conductor on the Busted and Mined (its real name is the Boston and Maine, but usually its passengers and shippers called it "Busted and Mined" or "Busted and Mangled". The former was due to its being perpetually in receivership or bankruptcy; the the latter due to its perpetual financial woes that left no money to keep the track in good order and condition) who had a singsong style of announcing the stops. As the train approached Lynn, as its name is monosyllabic, he had to add something to keep up the singsong, so he used to call out:

"Lynn, Lynn, the City of Sin; Lynn is next, Lynn."

And no one told DAD to keep his daughters out of an uber alone. Notice no note that THEIR account is closed.

Driver is a creep, but he's not the only problem here.

Taking underage riders, offering them alcohol, thinking they wouldn't rat him out at the first bit of pressure AND admitting his guilt to the cops... wow! What a comedy of errors. Hope it was worth it being the "cool" Uber guy or trying to hookup with a minor or whatever madness seized his senses.

Looks like the "Italian pervert" variation on IannIann's avatar picture. Surprised he got so many likes tbh. That Fabio ain't gracing the cover of any romance novel. .

D'oh! If only Uber would put controls in place to prevent minors from having access to their system!

I like if there's a need to hit the cancel button there no "unaccompanied minor" option. It would prob be the most used option yet they ignore the most concerning situation drivers face.

They seriously should look at everyone of this guys Trips and see if he has a pattern for doing this with minors, or worse.

Since there is no “unaccompanied minor” option to cancel before the ride begins, Uber can’t track/measure the problem.. and if they can’t track it/have no data, then to Uber, the problem does not exist.
