Uber background checks under scrutiny after felon driver assaults 2 women
KMOV.com Staff|10 hours ago

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- New details are emerging on how an Uber driver with a criminal past slipped through the ridesharing company's background checks.

The driver, Yahkhahnahn Ammi, is charged with assaulting women in St. Louis and Kansas City. This week the Kansas City victim filed a lawsuit against Uber.

In December, a St. Louis woman says she was also assaulted by Ammi, posting pictures online after the attack.

She filed a report with Uber right away and Ammi was later arrested in February. But in January, Ammi had moved to Kansas City.

He was arrested for a different assault on a different woman there. She is the one suing the company.

Uber tells News 4 Ammi has not had access to drive for them since March.

But in 1996, a judge sentenced him to 16 years in an Illinois prison for attempted murder.

So how did he pass the Uber background check?

In 1996 Ammi went by Perrie D. Gibson. When he was released from prison in 2012, he legally changed his name to Yahkhahnahn Daniell Eliezer Ammi.

That is why he wouldn't have been caught in a name-based background check. The suit says Uber has fought to keep those kinds of checks over more costly and accurate fingerprint-based check.

In a statement Uber says they are taking the matter extremely seriously. And they are reviewing the litigation.

I guess an attempted murder conviction disappears off the uber background check with a name change. So all you felons and child molesters make sure you change your name and keep driving with uber.

Or you can just have your brother who ISN'T a registered sex offender open a driver account and give you the phone.

I have been picked up by someone who was not the person on the pic and when I gave him 1 star Uber didn't ask why.
