Three Croakers

Picked up three attractive young women. They were just ending their shift at a department store. Nice, well dressed, polite - but damn, they all croaked. You know, vocal fry?

They were like three frogs in a Budweiser commercial. Most of it was back-and-forth conversation. A crook here, a croak there, croaking in the round. Sometimes they got excited about whatever they were talking about, and they all croaked in unison. It was a little surreal.

I don’t understand this phenomenon. It totally ruins their otherwise fantastic image. Do they talk to their boyfriends in that voice? Do they croak out, “oh God” during sex? Wouldn’t it be a turn off for the guy? Do they croak when they talk to their parents? “Hi mom, hi daddy.” Does that voice make their parents proud? At what age did they start croaking? Did it start in Kindergarden? Can little croakers be heard in pre-schools across the country? Do they croak when they start having kids? Do they croak out lullaby's to their babies? What kind of world are we creating with all this croaking? Where does it come from, why do they do it, and how can we stop it. We must put an end this croaking.

wut is croaked? Heavy smoker raspy sound?
Hormones.
Heavily prevalent in Asian women who are Post Menopausal.

Some women have voice pattern change that sounds like a dog growling when they speak.

It is Hormonal.
Smoking and whiskey drinking can also cause similar effect. Or contribute to Hormonal Vocal changes.a.k.a. " croaking".

Yes. It has been my theory that it has evolved out of valley girl talk.

vocal fry, noting a study that found that this speech pattern makes young women who use it sound less competent, less trustworthy, less educated and less hireable.

Retail, dude. When I worked it in college, it seemed like over half the employees took smoke breaks, went outside and chain-smoked out during their 5 to 10 minute break, while gossiping away. That was how they dealt with their crappy jobs. Have you ever talked to the lot lizards who do the same thing at the TNC lot? I bet they'd sound the same.

Seemed kind of unfair that the non smokers didn't get any breaks but hey, that's retail managers for you. Heck, that's a good life lesson as well.

Its also called Kardashian Speak. Its wildly popular with the under 30 age group of women.

Increasingly, women have been speaking with a creaky, guttural and exaggerated voice known as vocal fry. You may recognize the condition in celebrities like Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian, but the linguistic fad is a verbal tic frying their voices. What’s going on inside the throat of someone with vocal fry, which is also been called larygealization, glottal fry, and glottal scrap? Inside the throat are vocal folds made out of two strips of thin tissue, known as the glottis that become taut. When air passes through the glottis while it’s strained, they vibrate, rattle against each other, and create and the person’s voice resonates throughout the vocal cords.

According to Dr. Jim Daneiro, the head of the Voice and Swallowing Clinic at the University of Virginia, said those who talk often, loudly, or aggressively are at higher risk of injury. Coaches, teachers, and professors are at an increased risk of developing traumatic lesions on their vocals, polyps, or a cyst. Women speak with three different types of pitches — modal (most common), falsetto (highest register), and increasingly now the fry pulse.“What’s heartbreaking about the trend for destructive speech patterns is that yours is the most transformational generation – you’re disowning your power,” Kate Burke, a drama professor at the University of Virginia, said in a press release. “Young women, give up the vocal fry and reclaim your strong female voice.”
