Sitting in "time out" right now!

Whee! Just got timed out for declining four rides in a row--all because each was at least 11 minutes away and I'm not driving that in morning rush-hour traffic. So I figured I'd sign up here (after lurking for several months) and vent.

I'm on month nine of driving for Uber and now realize why the average driver goes just six months before giving it up. On balance, this is a terrible job.

I've written to Uber numerous times not merely to complain about how it handles time-outs, but also to suggest how the system can be improved. All I ever get are their boilerplate responses. And now I see we're being forced to accept all pool rides once you accept the first in a chain. Great.

Just counting down the days ...

Well, I think my 10 minute TO is up so back to this laughably underpaid grind.

When things get stupid like this, you gotta play the game... Next time accept the 4th, then cancel it. It will save you the timeout.

Don't accept them if they are longer than you're willing to go. Let them time out. If you keep getting same ping turn app off for a couple of min.

So , why are you doing it???
Two reasons: One, it's among the few jobs that affords me the flexibility to look for a real job and take on other freelance opportunities that could lead to proper full-time work in my profession; and two, it provides the quick, rolling cash flow I need to pay bills (waiting two weeks or a month isn't ideal for me right now).

In that second respect, it's like those payday loan places in that Uber isn't actually economical to drive for, but enables immediate, short-term commitments to be met.

Cancellations count as well towards the timeouts. Sometimes it 2 or 3 non-accepts or cancels, depending on the driver. The longer you do it and the louder you complain, your timeout will drop to 4 minutes and that's acceptable. My timeout started at 30 minutes and dropped to 10 then 4 min.
