During large events, riders will be guided to a designated rideshare zone. The designated zone (pickup/drop-off area) is located on South 9th Avenue (Bud Grant Way).
You may enter the rideshare zone from either 6th Street or 7th Street. Please note, you will need to display Trade Dress to enter the rideshare zone
All this means Uber will be collecting a $1+ event fee and is smoke and mirrors to do so.
Designated drop-off has value however designated pick-ups are useless when drivers are pushed into the flow of traffic, there are minimal signs directing the rider to this area, there is a pop-up on the app that directs riders to the pick-up area which the rider does not read. The only value I see is that the rider and driver can find each other.
My opinion is a designated route for Taxis, Rideshare, Shuttles, limos would isolate the cluster and allow people to move in/out more efficiently. I think the downside is that when 60k or in my case 100K leave an event at the same time, there are not enough drivers to handle the demand and the logical solution is to move those rides faster. It's a win/win for the rider and driver. Faster ride home and driver can take 2-3 rides instead of the 1 since they are in that cluster.
I have found success of taking rides where the rider will walk to me and my pickup allows me to divert around the traffic and road closures. Last night I did a 38 mile ride in 50 minutes where about 60k were leaving an event. 5-10 of those minutes was a detour because of a on ramp closure. The rider was in my car within 10 minutes of me accepting the ride.
Pick up zones are a disaster! I've worked Basilica Block Party and other Uber sponsored events. Traffic makes it impossible to get in and out. People cross the street and just keep walking and don't care you have a green light. It's a JOKE! You're better off doing the exact opposite and stay far away from events. You'll make more and save massive time. One run took 2 hours! #NotWorthIt

Last year, I found some really slick ways in and out of TCF Bank (that never involved Huron, or University Ave from the West!) - but that only worked for drop-offs - I tried pickups after the event ONCE and it WAS NOT WORTH IT as you say...
The issues with pick-ups started well before the traffic picked up. Anytime I was close to the Pick-up zone my AT&T Iphone signal dropped. And Ping after Ping failed. At that point I just got out of there. I was actually wondering if someone was jamming us, but then saw some reviews from the people in the stadium, I guess everyone had poor reception. The cell towers around the stadium most of been overwhelmed.
If you do event runs, stick with drop offs, and let the new drivers take on the pick ups after an event. They will figure out quickly how hard and frustrating driving is.
