Police: Uber driver knocks out passenger during fight over route
Tamp Bay Times - Aug 11, 2017

ST. PETERSBURG — An Uber driver punched his passenger during a fight, police said, leaving the man fighting for his life.

Driver Kabir O'Farril Diaz, 38, picked up Terry Lynn Kimball, 56, about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, according to St. Petersburg police. The two men got into an argument about the route Diaz was taking, so he pulled into the Quick Pick Foods store at 500 58th St. N near St. Petersburg Catholic High School. That's where they began fighting.

During the altercation, Diaz punched Kimball, who lost consciousness and didn't regain it. He was taken to a hospital with "serious brain trauma," officers said, and his injuries could be life threatening.

Diaz was cooperating with the ongoing investigation, police said. He has not been charged.

Update: Passenger is facing life-threatening injuries:

From the info in the link provided it appears by a witness account and previous arrest record that he was the aggressor in this and ended up on the wrong side of a fight.

An angry drunk got physical and a driver engaged some self defense.

99% of the time people are the same kind of drunk all the time,

IE happy drunk, giggly drunk, stupid drunk, huggy drunk..

An angry drunk is an angry drunk,

DUI, simple battery, resisting arrest, and disorderly intoxication.

This is symptomatic of the guy being an angry drunk.

This is science talking... like real fo sho science.

It sucks that the guy got hurt but drunken rage is very difficult to overcome and drunks have distinct combat advantages.
It's important to note that alcohol numbs pain, meaning you have to deliver more hurt than normal to get someone to back down.

If an angry drunk is attacking you, you have to keep hitting until they back down, because they won't listen to reason, show empathy ect and the first few hits will only infuriate them worse.

It's very possible the guy kept swinging right up until he lost consciousness.

lol once he's out of the car what is there to discuss? Get back in the car and drive away, hanging around trying to prove some point will sometimes come at the drunk's expense, and sometimes you get demolished by a little blonde girl with a machete.

It could have been started as a battle to throw him out, he might not have let the driver back into the car, he might not have let him shut the door... the passenger could have been preventing the driver from moving the car...

"Get back in the car and drive away" may not be as simple as getting in the car and driving away.

Maybe, or maybe not. To get hurt that badly from a punch the guy would have had no idea it was coming, and this seemed to have happened well outside of the car (if he was hurt from the fall and not from the punch itself). Surveillance video will undoubtedly tell the full story.
