Goober wants it both ways. I've gotten airport pings when I was 5 miles away from the AP in Scottsdale.
It's unfortunate that these pings kick you from the queue but I wouldn't worry about your acceptance rating. If AP rides are worth it to you, I guess hang tough or get the hell out of there.
As far as accepting those non AP pings, it really depends how far away they are. If anything over 7 minutes away, ignore.
Just remember this, Goober doesn't care about you in any way. You do what works for you.

It's a crapshoot. I let two go today and ended up with a $27 ride to Peoria.
Watch out for this scam. Pax drops pin in the airport. You accept and then get a text from the pax that they are actually in Tempe. You can cancel, but it drops you out of the queue. It's going to get bad in Tempe in a month.
Why exactly are passengers given the ability to place their location pin somewhere other than where the GPS says they are? I cannot think of any legitimate reason, but maybe someone can enlighten me.
There are a couple of legitimate reasons. One is when you call for a ride to pick up a different person at a different location.
The other one I can think of is for a passenger in a large building placing the pin at the entrance at which they want to be met. I've seen the need for this most frequently at casinos.
In either case, though, this should be done before, not after hailing the ride.
When school starts, there will be all kinds of this happening though. I hope uber figures out some way to fix this. If im pulled from the queue to take some lazy ASU student a quarter mile, I'm going to be pissed.

The thing to watch around the airport will be surge. That area was surging like mad in the winter. Will the app now see the airport queue as service for that area? If so, that surrounding area will never surge, and those pax will be stuck. If they would cut off the airport completely from the surrounding area, and allow that area to surge, you would have drivers sitting outside the geofence. It would balance the service.
I got a ping while waiting in lot. It was just outside the airport circle. When arrived to pick them up was tipped $20 before I even started the trip... Because, as the pax shared 2 other Ubers had accepted then declined their request. Little did the drivers waiting in the parking lot know it'd end up being a $27 ride out to Litchfield Park... $47 for 40min... Vs sitting for another 30min the he lot... Waiting.
I got pinged out of the west lot once. Dragged me out to 26th street and Wood, an un-lit street just north of Broadway that is about half empty lots and half rundown shacks that barely qualify as houses. It was made clear to me by the locals that my pax wasn't there and that I shouldn't be there. I cancelled and left before 5 min, happily surrendering the cancellation fee.
Airport is pointless. I did an entire day at the airport. I went offline after dropping off, and immediately drove back to the airport. 12 hour day, 9.5 hours online. $71.29 and $11 in tips. If you count only online time that's $8.69 an hour. With travel time back to the airport, its only $5.94 an hour.
It's not worth doing as you described it - lots of dead miles and dead time.
But if I'm close, I'll jump in the lot, clean, grab a snack, take a break, etc. You have a fairly certain window to get reset, and your next pax is probably putting you in Scottsdale, the east valley or downtown.
Old thread but I thought I'd share my experience today. I picked up a pax in Chandler and took him to the airport. Went to the queue because I was there. After about 10 minutes I got a ping. It was in freaking Scottsdale! 20 minutes away. I stupidly took it. On my way I was re-matched to a "closer" PAX except my GPS said it was 4 more miles and 6 more minutes away that the other one. It turned out to be an airport run again, which I guess was ok, but driving 20 minutes for another 20 minute ride in morning rush hour for $9??? WTF!?!?! Never again!
I agree with all of you. But I've had a few passengers who place the pin outside of the Surge area and then call me to change the pickup location to what I know is the surge area. I learned to cancel those requests because it hurts all of us. I'm hoping that all of you will have the good sense to not let the passengers hurt our pockets by doing this.
I've dropped off at the airport then got an immediate ping to pick up noticing that the queue had over 40 cars waiting. It's not fair but I take it.
I usually wait at the airport when I need a break. As soon I get a ride I'm refreshed to continue the rest of the day or night. I never go directly to the airport lot, only if I drop off.
