Im a seasonal Uber driver. I drive only in the month of December, Halloween, 4th of July, SantaCon.... a total of 50 days per year. I noticed that its getting worse for drivers year after year.. December 2016 Uber sent me BoostZones all over Hudson county all rides were x2.0 at regular rate no surge if you start the ride within the zone, plus good Quest and promotions. December 2017 they didn't send me any boost zone but they started a new thing which was the 3 consecutive trips but the payment was good ($12-$15 per 3 trips) and the promotion used to last Friday from 2pm until midnight then Saturday and Sunday the whole day. This December is the worst, they sent me a consecutive trips promotion that last only 2 hours on Friday from 3pm to 5pm and Saturday from 6am to 8am with a payment of $4.5 per 3 trips, the quest is $70 per 55 trips and the surge is gone.
so I decided not to work because its not worth it for me and thought that its not worth for you guys as well but when I go outside I see Uber drivers all over the place.. So, I only have 2 explanations, either you guys are getting good surge and promotions or y'all are dumb and Uber is taking advantage of y'all.

A message to all the aimless Uber drivers on the road who signed up in the past year: GET A REAL ******* job or go back to SCHOOL. You WILL NOT make any money doing this and you live under the false delusion that somehow you will make it rich doing this. You are only destroying your vehicle that you leased from some pawn shop who is only trying to take advantage of you or maybe you have poor English speaking skills. :D

This gig is worthwhile from a financial perspective for only a relatively small percentage of drivers based on my analysis.

Some of the old timers here have apadted to the rate cuts, infrequent surges, and a large infestation of ants while others have not.

I know of many on this board that are smart and savvy and are not "dumb".

Unfortunately, many that partake in this gig are indeed dumb as you like to call them. I've encountered a myriad of ants that are innumerate and do not know how calculate or even remotely come close to analyze profits or losses doing this gig with expenses factored in.

The educational system in this country is in shambles as evidenced by the huge number of ants out there that have zero concept about their profits or losses in this gig. It pains me to see these drivers get used and abused by the ride share industry.

Instead of calling everyone dumb with a blanket statement, l would carefully read all postings here and determine which drivers know how to work this gig in the current environment and pick their brains for ideas. With you being a seasonal driver, you might not have the insights that others who hit the pavement more often have.

Happy New Year!

..but friend, there was "the 180 days of change"....and Uber's got SO much better!!

sarc

Actually, what was happening before was abnormal. What's happening now, is normal.

Finally the market has corrected itself.

A gig that requires no education, no skills, and offers such a high level of flexibility, cannot realistically be expected to pay anything more than minimum wage, especially in a competitive market place sans regulation.

For me personally, I'm doing far less than half as many trips this year, as I did last year. Simply not worth it.

I'll disagree. If you're doing this part-time, you have a plan, and you maximize your hours, there is money to be made.

But my case is different than others, because I've been doing this for four years and I keep religious notes on my numbers and strategies.

If you go into this without a plan, then you will fail.

People need money.
Don't drive if you don't see value.
With the Uber ipo approaching, expectation is some point in the near term no promotions or incentive to drivers.
With the holiday plenty of teachers & college students doing rides.
Well, I think desperate drivers are the reason why Uber is lowering rates for drivers.. If nobody worked for these flat rates Uber won't have drivers to supply all the demand and they will think twice next time before deciding to not give us incentives and surge. Im no slave and I would rather deliver pizza for a local pizzeria than being used by Uber. F### that!

yeah don't expect any sympathy when you announce you are a seasonal driver and only drive when you think its good when most on the forum do this part time regularly or full time because you are the one seen as the problem. Not trying to sound mean but that's just truth.
wait a second, do you know that when Uber started few years ago it was meant to be a part-time gig. They promoted themselves as a part-time opportunity to use your car after work or in weekends to make extra money. Don't expect any sympathy if you were naive to quit your full-time job and rely on an App.

I did say I wasn't trying to be mean but ok...

Well......first off you don't know anyone else's situation and why they drive Uber whether that be part time to make ends meet or full time in between jobs, or full time because maybe they have other obligations in life that make doing Uber as a full time gig convenient and possible.

Next, you insult everyone who is out there for whatever their reasons are for driving saying everyone must be dumb. Maybe you are just the dummy and they are just smarter than you because they figured out how to make it work all year round, not just on the days when a 12 year old with a scooter could figure out how to make it work.

Oh and if you haven't noticed.....people rely on apps for just about everything including full time work, its 2018.

The number one reason for the onslaught of ants are the drivers who sit and harp about how much they are making (multiplied by many times) and then pass on their referral codes to reap those pennies. The air headed millennials soak up the bullshyt stories and get out here and wander aimlessly taking anything that pings. No more surges, just more morons. The sad fact is that many old timers are guilty of the above charges. They become miserable and see the referral as a way to recoup some $$ that is lost to the ants, never realizing they are doing more damage to their future earnings. FYI, in 3+ years I have never given my codes, even a friend asked me just last week for my Lyft code and I refused. I know he will never get the required ride count to qualify, plus he lives by me so would be my competition.

Reading these people here is like watching the drivers at EWR trying to cut in front of others cars to get first at the lot entrance and not at the Queue ratio...or the ones that desperately hunk after entering to the lot to get one of the dozens of empty parking spots...the same ones that block and deny preference to the ones that are already leaving to get a passenger...

It won't change anything for them...just getting more frustrated than they already are and making their life suck even more...

The past is gone...it is sad but that is the only truth...those good old days that some of you enjoyed are gone...they won't comeback...

Some of the new drivers won't stay for that long and you know it.. I am sure that you witnessed that a lot through all your fabolous and painful Uber journey...is not their fault...is not their race or language...is the future of this business...is the OWNERS of this business decision...I know that some of you, because how old you are, feel frustrated because this was a good way to make money and don't be rejected for a job because of your age or past working experience...I feel you...but don't take it out on the innocent people that won't never read your feelings...which make it even more sad for you...were referred to this business by someone that doesn't read this crap either...get a life and take time to do research and find a "new" way to bank... because (again) your good old days are gone... lol

By the way, I want to know what this short dark skin guy that drives a Cadillac and is always wearing a Hoodie does at the airport with the drivers that approach him. Do some of you know? I want to be in...I think he knows some cool tricks...

This article is from almost 2 years ago, most places I'm aware of have made Uber legal. I wouldn't be surprised if all the cars on the rider app were real.
I did notice though--a few times past few days, when I had the rider app on and my DF going, some fake ghost cars. Because on the rider app, I was "passed" by one but there were no other actual moving vehicles in the immediate vicinity. I was on Monmouth St in Red Bank, I did a drop at Robinson Ale and pulled over for a few minutes. My location was showing on app.
