Is this a unicorn?

I see people referring to "catching a unicorn" and I'm not sure what that is. Here is what happened.
First ride request last night was to pick Tiffany up at a semi-dive bar.

Heading from Edmonds to Shoreline. Tiffany asks me if we are going to pass Dick's. I says "ya." She says I'll give you $20 to stop there so I can get a bag of cheese burgers. "done !" says I. She tosses me a twenty before she gets out to buy her burgers. Comes back to car with 2 bags full. Then asks me how many cheeseburgers I want. ( didn't want any since I had a late dinner)

Anyway, was that catching a unicorn? Or just a wonderful way to start my night? or both?

That happens to me most Fridays or Saturdays. Except it's a lot further than Edmonds to shoreline. More like Ballard to shoreline or further. Yes we pass that Dix on Holman Rd. (Don't know why this board is auto-editing out the proper spelling of that local burger joint. It's a person's name) Anyways.....Yes if the pax are responsible/ respectable I stop for them and gladly accept my cash tip and Dix DeLux and chocolate shake as gratitude payment. Never considered it a unicorn though.

I'd have to say my unicorn was Monroe Washington to Sea-tac airport. Another was Redmond to Snoqualmie Casino, and then catching the same pax 4 hrs later ( after working local in Snoqualmie during that timeframe) to take him back to Redmond.

2 bags of Dix burgers doesn't sound like a unicorn. That sounds more like gastric distress.

  5. To me, a unicorn is generally defined as a high-surge, long ride. The apex of the surge wave combined with an extraordinary length for the trip.

If that burger run passenger was at a 3x surge heading into Seattle? Could be a unicorn.

  12. Exactly. The unicorns were the $120+ rides from Seattle to Kent I got after key arena concerts or that lucky bar surge long ride

I got a 2.8x from Centurylink Field to South Hill after a Seahawks game once. The husband and wife had been fighting over getting the Uber before I got there. He was throwing a fit and walking around trying to find the light rail station. It took us a good 15+ min to track him down, driving around SODO. She's like GET YER ASS IN HERE HANK!!!! NOOOOOWWWWW!!!! IT"S WARM IN HERE YOU FOOL! They kind of whisper argued (awkward) the whole trip down to South Hill. I was given a $30 cash tip. That was a fun one. Also got a MEGA PT Unicorn out of White River Amplitheater once, going to Bonney Lake. My take was $130. No tip, and they 1 starred me, flagging me in every category to get a refund from CSR.... bastards.... It was worth the $130 though. lol They lived in a multi-million dollar mansion in a place I didn't even know existed in Bonney Lake. A little Medina, in Pierce County, apparently. No... it wasn't Lake Tapps.

It's been a minute. I wonder if this summer will give as freely as last. I'm starting to get some $50 fares again starting this month... had a 200% from Belltown to the highlands in east Redmond last week (yum yum... more please).

$165! Holy crap. Never got one that big. I got a $125 to the AP one time. Pax was kinda.... not too thrilled, but didn't take it out on me. Really interesting guy, actually. He didn't know that I knew it was mega surging. He was like, 'well, you're gonna like once you get the payment for this ride... I hope you know that'. I'm smiling like... oh yeah?

Yeah the $165 was around 500%

I always pretend that I don’t know it’s mega surging. “don’t know Sir, I’m just a driver, have you tried the Seattle Dog?!?! it has cream cheese”

My pax yesterday was I think unaware that she'd ordered a ride at 200%. It was all "you've been great" and "nice car" when I dropped her off but saw later that my rating had taken a 2 point ding.

Cost her over 150 bucks to get from 3rd Ave downtown to Federal Way at 3:45 in the afternoon.

That’s why you work to maintain a high rating, so you can sell off stars at a high market price.

There are four things I never talk about during a trip: politics, religion, ratings, and Prime/Surge.

There is, as some have found out the hard way, another type of unicorn:
