Starting on Wednesday, the Waze Carpool app will enable users to find rides from Waze drivers that are headed in the same direction, not unlike Lyft Line and Uber Pool, the startups' respective carpooling features.

Payment for the ride will be handed inside the app. For the rest of October, rides are $2. After that, the cost will be determined on a per-mile basis at 54 cents per mile, Waze said.

One key difference from Uber or Lyft is that Waze Carpool drivers are regular people with day jobs, not professional drivers. Drivers can only drive two carpools per day, for example. Waze will verify people's workplaces through their email, Waze said.

Waze has already partnered with a bunch of schools and workplaces, including Amazon, to get people to use the feature. Waze Carpool will be available at 50 Amazon warehouses, "making it even easier for Amazon employees to save time and money by carpooling to work together," according to a press release issued on Wednesday.

This is more of a social experiment than rideshare app if anything...
but there are gonna be bumps...like people "catfishing" their pics to get attractive chicks/guys

the app is gonna show a pic of a buff, suave "Fabien"...but when you arrive, you will be riding with "Bubba" in some snuff stained overalls and a truck hat that says "Brad Pitt Stunt Double"

nah...Waze..I'm good

stick to navigation.

As stated in the Waze Carpool Terms of Service, the driver is responsible for obtaining insurance and must be covered in the case of any accidents that may occur while driving (similar to any other drive). This coverage must include coverage for any third parties who are included in the ride, including carpool riders.

If you’re the driver, you should confirm with your insurance company that your insurance covers carpooling.

Auto insurance policies in many states, including California, typically allow not-for-profit, share-the-expense carpooling. Waze Carpool is designed to help riders and drivers share the cost of carpooling on a given ride. It’s not designed to allow a driver to make a profit or to earn a salary. Payments to the driver by the rider will always be less or equal to the cost of the particular drive, taking account of such factors as gas and vehicle depreciation.

This is still fare for hire. The advertised rate of $.54/mile is not chip in for gas, it's not you drive this week then I'll drive next. This is not carpooling this is transporting people for compensation. Let's see what the insurance companies have to say about this. Good luck to all you that say "Google said it was ok."
