I was considering driving for Uber Perth 'till I heard from a friend that I need a full australian license? Would Uber consider drivers who have an international license, since I've been here for nearly 2 years?
Have some mercy, maybe the man has a huge family oversea, and learning is not the main reason he came to Australia. After 40 hours, the last of which he thinks is to sit down and learn.
Yes, international students do have money saved up to come here. But what's wrong with getting a part time job on the side? Why call it "stealing" when it's called "effort".
Because you are meant to contribute to our economy with the funds you already have (from mummy and daddy). Not come here and TAKE from our economy. You cant afford to come, thats not our problem.
This is exactly what happened in the taxi industry. Students who were meant to be studying getting caught using friends ID Card and driving the taxis.
Then huge cry of racism from certain race that pretty much forced DPI and Immigration officers to stop the targetted sting operations.
Those were some funny days, DPI would stop driver then immigration would check you out lol!
Day driver would be driving under fake identity and night driver would be sleeping in the boot ready to start shift at 6pm.
The fact that you even found this forum and signed up with due haste just goes to prove my point ...
So you're trying to say part-time jobs for international students are irrelevent? Then why did the government allow international students hours to work? Do you know if international students work, we have to pay taxes too? I guess not. Get your facts right.
If you work 40 her fortnight then it is legal once you get proper license. Unfortunately most aren't because they know no ones checks. Then they would do cash economy jobs as well (knew one taxi driver doing peak period taxi who also worked at BP weeknights and was landscape gardener as well as student). Had to admire them for their efforts but totally illegal (not that that seems to matter). State government turned blind eye cause they flooded market with Taxis (at $13000 pa revenue to them) and needed drivers who would work for lower than minimum wage. That was the downfall of Taxi industry for drivers and passengers as number went up but service went down.
That is why Uber is popular but now those drivers are taking over Uber as well ruining our reputation in less than a year. I am campaigning my local MP to make it a ruling that a driver must reside in WA at least a year before F or T extension can be applied for. Need local knowledge as well as GPS for this job.
Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.
Yeah ok well you do what you want to do. Whatever it is, having that kind of mentality whereby you think international students are "stealing" your jobs is unacceptable. It is permissable to work and working hours are given. We pay taxes if we work, so you can't exactly say we're only "TAKING" from the country.

Ok ok guys, he asked gently so maybe tell the truth is better than argue on how we all love the law in every aspect (so I will not mention how the old taxi industry used to love cash payments, appearently for no reasons since they all have to declare all their income, don't they?!?!) so let's go straight the point(s):
- yes, you need a full aussie licence
- you will need an F extension of the aussie licence
- you will need a decent 4 door car (the s$%ttier it looks, the sooner you'll be kicked out of the system by poor ratings)
- you will need to get an abn with gst (don't think to skip this part because the ATO will automatically get all your income details from Uber.. even your kms...)
- you will probably need an accountant if you dont wanna do mistakes
- you will be required to pay the commercial insurance on your car (that cost something)
On the other side, you will be allowed to work when you think is better for you. Unfortunately, the awful truth is that if you want to net like some casual baristas (that in total respect of the law can work his 20hrs per week).. you will probavly have to spend in your car much more than 60hrs PER WEEK. And every move will be on records.. so the day the immigration will ask some information, Uber will promptly respond sending all your details and timetables and kms.. as they already did when the ATO asked..
They rely on the fact government has awarded student visa. Therefore they are deemed to be fit and proper. No one with a criminal record would be given such a visa.
Yeah...
