Discrepancy in Uber advice about New Year incentives

There is a significant discrepancy in the advice from Uber about New Year incentives in Canberra.

This is the in-app advice:

And this is the text of an email sent at 4.01 pm on Friday 29 December:

Jack, why not get on the road this New Year’s Eve?

This New Year’s Eve, we’ll top-up your fares so that you make at least $25 per hour between 5pm - 1am and $33 per hour between 1am - 3am. See full terms and conditions below.

Be ready to hit the road and start making money - here’s a guide on what to do next:

Incentive times

The fare top-up will be available during the following hours:

  • $25 per hour: Sunday 31st December, 5pm to 1am
  • $33 per hour: Monday 1st January, 1am to 3am
New Year’s Eve is usually our busiest night of the year and this gives you even more confidence that you’ll earn great money!

Requirements to qualify for the fare top-up:
  • Complete at least 1.3 trips per hour that you are online
  • Accept at least 80% of trip requests
  • Be online during the incentive hours
Note: there is no need to ‘opt-in’ to receive this fare top-up.

Terms & Conditions

Only the intended recipients of this offer are eligible. If your fares average under $25 an hour during 5pm - 1am on Sunday 31st December 2017, then we’ll top it up so that your average earnings are at least $25 per hour. If your fares average under $33 an hour between 1am - 3am on Monday 1st January 2018, then we’ll top it up so that your average earnings are at least $33 per hour. These amounts are after Uber’s service fee is deducted. This top-up applies only during the times and in the areas set out in this email.

I got this discrepancy as well.

I wouldn’t bother chasing either of them. The surge through the night and early Monday will blow these incentives away. In fact the 80% acceptance is a real trap, as there will be plenty of 20min+pickups being offered so decline 2 or 3 in a row and the whole guarantee is gone.

And a few tips from the last 2 NYE experiences.

Best times, 6pm to 10pm. Then on Monday, 1am to 7am and midday to early evening.

Worst times, all of Sunday before 6pm. 10pm to 1am is also dead as most pax are revelling.

In general, NY eve is average. NY Day is surge city.

Also, last year Uber had a fixed surge post midnight. Before midnight, no surge anywhere. At the stroke of 12, a solid 1.5x surge placed on the entire Canberra. From around 1am, surge fluctuated including 4x and 5x in some hot spots.

This year? More drivers, but incentives are smaller. Also more pax, many many many more pax using Uber.

This changed again last night as well. I didn't make it out due to family commitments but checked in to see where it was at and this was the message displayed.

Mind you at that time Tuggers was going through a 5x surge. I'm starting to think that these incentives are fluid as well and change with demand if they can't get enough drivers out. They don't stick to what they are preadvertised at.
