Black/SUV Reality Check: Real Numbers

I have been driving a Chevy Tahoe for Uber the past 1 1/2 years. I LOVE my Tahoe, but as we all know, the Black and SUV rides have decreased dramatically which has forced us to accept X rides. Recently, I have been seriously considering trading in my Tahoe for a Honda Accord Hybrid since 91% of my rides are X rides and it is just not worth the added expenses incurred with an SUV. The past few days I have been doing my due diligence and crunching the numbers. I went and test drove an Accord Hybrid this past weekend. Awesome car and will most likely be making the purchase, although transitioning from driving an SUV to a sedan will be tough.

I thought I would share with you some interesting data. I went through all my trips I have done since January 1, 2019 and came up with the following. For any of you considering doing Black and/or SUV, you might change your mind after seeing these numbers. I should point out that I drive part time. I work from home during the day and drive in the evenings when my other work is slow. On average, this year I have driven about 30-35 hours per week.

The trip data below is for the period from 1/1/19 to 5/5/19:

Total Trips:
890
Total "X" Trips: 811
Total BLACK Trips: 67
Total SUV Trips: 12

91% of my trips were X rides
7.5% of my trips were BLACK rides
1.4% of my trips were SUV rides

# of Trips:

< $30
< $20
BLACK

The above table shows the number of "big whale" rides you get are very few. 65% of my BLACK and SUV rides were less than $30!

Average Black/SUV Fare:

BLACK*:
$26.67
SUV**: $32.25

* Excludes 3 trips over $100
** Excludes 1 trip at $212.55

I hope this is an eye opener for anyone considering doing Black or SUV. We've all known it wasn't worth it, but I thought I would share actual data with you.

I forgot one thing...I did not include my XL rides. I did about 15-20 XL rides. I no longer accept XL rides because they are just not worth the hassle when the pay is not that much more than an X fare.

Black and is for experienced drivers. I know some who make 2-3 grand every week consistently and then theirs a lot of people like you struggling. But the ones that make money are at work at 4am and work til 8-10pm mon-fri.

Yeah, I can’t and am not willing to put in those kind of hours. There were times where I did do several 60-65 hour weeks and easily made over $2K a week but it’s too exhausting and grueling and just not sustainable over the long haul.

A hybrid isn't worth it. Their parts cost more so it offsets the money you save on gas. Stick to a 2016-2018 accord. Or a Camry. Prius if you really want a hybrid. They’re more bulletproof

You dont need a black car to make those numbers with those kind of hours.
You’re right. But in a Camry you are actually working for 60-70 hrs, picking up 150+ passengers a week. These guys spend most of there time on Netflix or inappropriate site. Pickup 30-60 passengers a week. I still wouldn’t do it because it’s not life. Sitting in your car for 15 hours a day.

What do they do in their spare time?

From 4am to 10pm it's a 18hr shift. Doesn't matter if someone drives or watches porn and jerking in this time. His body still takes the toll. It's still considered as working hours. The guy who works that much is just a slave with no life. Doesn't matter how much he makes. He actually lives in the car and probably he and his car both stink. He has to start next morning at 4am again and from 10pm to 4am he doesn't have enough time to go home and rest. He won't last long. It's just a matter of time when he gets some kind of health and mental problems.

Why in the world are you taking X rides?
Any time that New York surges over 2x, you will get a Black SUV request.

The reason is XL and X surge as a pair. Select and Black surge as a pair.

When X and XL are 2x, Uber Black and Black SUV are now the cheapest options. Black SUV requests will start rolling in at the height of a surge.

Btw, I don’t know what NYC market is like and I haven’t tracked it’s surge history.
