Uber driver accused of taking off with customer's luggage and $8,000 in cash

HOUSTON, Texas - Uber says they are investigating a trip to the airport that ended with a rider missing his flight and losing $8,000 in cash.

Hamid Beris told Eyewitness News that he got in an Uber Monday night, and the driver took off with all his luggage and cash.

"I said before going to the airport, 'Can we just go to my friend's house? I want to say goodbye to him before going,'" Beris said.

Beris was headed to Iran for a medical procedure, and he said he packed his laptop, medical records and $8,000 for his surgery.

"I just came back, and I see he's not here," Beris said.

Keith, the Uber driver, allegedly took off with all of Beris luggage and personal items.

Without a passport or cash, Beris missed his medical appointment and non-refundable flight.

Beris says he spent all night trying to call Keith and Uber's customer service.

During the Eyewitness News interview, the Uber driver finally returned Beris' call.

He claimed he became frustrated with Beris and decided to leave and drop his luggage off in a parking lot.

Beris found his luggage abandoned with his cash, laptop and passport intact
    .

After minutes of standing in the parking lot in disbelief, an Uber representative returned Beris phone call.

"You are the only person who called me," Beris explained to the Uber representative. "It's almost 12 p.m. Tuesday. I begged you guys to tell me what I should do next."

Uber refunded his car ride and said they would look into refunding his plane ticket.

Probably a short ride with a long stop while he was “kissing” his boyfriend goodby.

He knew Iranians don’t tip so he left his ass

Uber, this is what happens when the driver only makes a dime and some pennies per minute when waiting for pax like this.
Solution: Have an option for the driver like "make a stop". Then after 1 or 2 minutes the pax will start paying $1 (or more) per min while his uber is waiting for him/her to come back. When they come back, the driver chooses to "resume trip" and keeps getting paid as usual.
Of course this is an idea that has loopholes and may be subject of abuse, but if refined would be better.

Here's an idea. Take 1st Uber to see friend, like $8 maybe. Take 2nd Uber to airport, after seeing friend, like $28 maybe.

    Savings $7,964!

The ENTIRE problem here is passengers do not value our TIME...

ADD: Having 1st Uber wait probably saved passenger all of what, $5 : ?

Graduates of Russian and Cuban medical schools?

These days that's what they call "news" .. truth or confirmed facts dont matter, only clicks.. and to get clicks, you need clickbait.. It's not only Yahoo, it's virtually all "news" outlets..

Why after 1 or 2 minutes? If a paxhole wants to stop then they should pay $1 per minute the moment the driver arrives at the stop until they leave. End of story. End of stop requests.

Cheap ass pax would try to make you wait without adding a stop then. You'd say no, they'd get pissed off. It would be the same old story. No extra coins for you and 1 star rating.

The app should have a switch to hit to tell uber when you stop and when you leave. No need too even tell the paxhole.

Of course when they see their bill they'll one star you but for $10 I'll take it every time.

Seriously? 25 stops on one trip and they wouldn't be deactivated?

I agree drivers game everything. I do too. You have to. But uber can hire engineers that aren't idiots and develop an app to deal with it. It wouldn't be hard.
