After what happened to me 2 weeks ago I vouched I am not picking up anymore MALES at night unless they're alone and that varies. Actually I decided I will not work anymore nights after 9pm unless I am doing airport trips. Every night that I have worked I end up arguing and cursing with a group of drunk guys who are trying to squeeze 5 in an UberX. EVERY FREAKING NIGHT.
QUICK FLASHBACK. Two weeks ago a group of 5 big dudes refused to leave my car then started harassing, cursing and wouldn't leave me alone. I had to exit my own car and call the police. I was with the police until they scattered. Afterward I called Uber and gave them the rider's name and told them what happened. Who knows if the rider got banned or not.
Problem is this keeps occurring and Uber doesn't seem to be doing anything about it or enforcing it. I'm not a "*****" for not standing up but I am respectable and this is my job. That incident scared the **** out of me. These guys were big and I thought I was going to get attacked.
What can we do about it? Dash cam plus indoor car video recording? What is there to do?

Usually when i get to a location 80% of time i stop and keep my foot on the brake pedal so the doors stay locked. I actually do this because its easier on the transmission and less work/hassle. When i put it in park the doors open automatically. I generally do this when i want to stretch my driving leg. But yea, i generally have doors locked and roll my window down. Like others mentioned, i try to keep an exit available so i can take off if i don't like the people or the trip. But sometimes i slip up.
Speaking of slip-ups.. You'd think after 2+ years of driving i wont pull any more rookie moves. The other night i had 30 mile trip or so from Logan in Boston to Andover i think it was. It was late and almost 1Am so i said let me stop by Waltham (suburb known for surge because of nearby collages) on my way home for a quick 2.5 surge trip. Since my last incident i have avoided nights/drunk people unless i do airport trips. So i said to myself what are the odds of getting a bunch of dicks? I was exhausted but it was on my way home and too good to pass on 2.5. I saw these 4 young guys students approach my car and immediately i laughed and let out a sigh.. **** it ill take it. They were nice but while the front passenger bombarded me with questions, a girl snuck in the back. I realized it 200 feet later. They were insisting and I didn't feel like arguing so i dropped them off a mile away, then drove home 4 miles. It came out to be $20+ so whatever, it topped off my night.

As above, always roll up to every drunk shift pickup with the doors locked. If you see more than 4 waiting then keep going. Don't stop near them, don't enter into any negotiation with them. Ride denied. If you do not see more than 4 then stop, crack the window and ask how many. If the answer is more than 4 then drive off; no negotiation. Find somewhere nearby to park up and then no show them at 5:00.
Three is my maximum group size on the drunk shift. If I roll up and see more than three then they don't get a ride. Four males is going to be a difficult ride because they are all going to be competing with each other to see which one can be the biggest dck.
Groups of four females is going to be a noisy ride - each of the females will be doing the screeching/screaming laughter thing that females do when alone with each other, competing to see which one can make the most noise.
Groups of two couples will be a difficult ride because the two males will be acting like dicks in order to try to impress the females.
I don't like difficult rides; I like nice, easy rides. It's best to leave these groups on the curb for the next driver.

This - exactly this. I don't argue about rules and policies - I end it (or make them cancel) and move on. On that note, when driving nights and busy areas always make sure you have an "out" - so you can easily get away.
Always try and scope them out and vet them before they see you. Use the ride app lag time to your advantage for that.
Don't get blocked in by cars, don't pull up too close to other cars. If you're downtown many are one way streets. Use the side of the street that allows you to make a turn (right or left) to the perpendicular street so you're not stuck at a red light and have them running up bothering you.

What do you think Uber *can* do about it? The entire system is basically a computer program, providing a public service and is a de facto public utility. Its tough for them to turn down business, even if they had a valid way of detecting bad actors in advance.
Good suggestions so far. Uber has no mechanism to help you here, you have to employ better tactics to prevent yourself from getting into these situations, or avoid driving at night or where these groups exist.

I had a group of six try to get in my vehicle... Even asked if one could get in the trunk lol. Cancel and drive away. Seven people in a Nissan Rogue? I don't think so.
Dashcam is pretty useless in this situation. Uber doesn't care if you have a sworn statement from God, they won't do anything to the pax. You'll either get an increase cancel rate or a 1 star or you'll haul 5 in your X.
Keep your doors locked. Ask the first guy who walks up if he's alone or if there are more. If there are too many, drive around the corner wait 5 minutes and get a cancel fee.

I've been driving 3 years, and I've yet to experience this. Well, maybe once or twice. Your area probably has a higher incidence of spoil brats per square foot than mine. I also avoid areas like pacific beach ( high in frat boys, surfers, etc who can be dicks, at times, especially when drunk ) and also, I quit before midnight, because, in my experience, most are drunk after midnight.
Also, I work exclusively the airport now, which has eliminated this problem altogether.
Drunk, testosterone-filled meatheads can be some of the worst. Luckily, there are no big universities with frat and sorority row where I drive. I did go to school at an SEC party school, so know the type though. We also get lots of bachelor parties here all summer long, which can be similar sometimes. Keeping the doors locked and specifically asking how many is great advice.
I didn't drive last night on St. Patrick's. Was at one bar for a little where my friend (cute girl) was tending bar. A big group of meathead Tar Heel fans, all liquored up after "their" big win, started getting pretty vulgar and aggressive. They even thought it was a reasonable offer to invite the bartender back to the hotel room they were all sharing for some "group fun". They were a little pissed when she laughed in their faces and actually ended up getting kicked out. If that is anything like you have to deal with, OP, my sympathies!
I drove last night until 3:15 and was pleasantly surprised that I didn't had to refuse service to anybody. Most college brats are partying in Florida and aggravating my fellow ride share drivers over there. Doors remain locked until I confirm that only 4 will be riding. We didn't have UberXL until two weeks ago here, now I just tell them to call another Uber, split the group or wait for an XL driver.
The other thing is that ALL UberX drivers need to start refusing more than four passengers. NO EXCEPTIONS.
...and if you ever do it at the very least please educate the passenger and let them know that other drivers probably will not do it and they are not supposed to have to do it. Tell them to get UberXL.
My sign on the headrests of my car, 1 in the front.
