ACT drivers get free online access to speed, red light camera images

22 June 2018 - 5:03pm

Drivers hit with speeding and red light fines in the ACT can now access images captured by mobile or fixed cameras for free online.

Previously, drivers wanting to see these pictures had to apply to Access Canberra's traffic camera office each time they received an infringement notice.

Access Canberra director of customer coordination Josh Rynehart said in 2017, ACT motorists disputed or requested the withdrawal of 15 per cent of traffic infringements.

He expected that figure to drop as a result of the new initiative, while also meant that drivers would now only need to contact Access Canberra in complex situations, like if they weren't driving the car at the time of the offence.

"Drivers don't often have a good recollection of the offence for which they have been issued an infringement, and this new initiative will assist drivers when paying fines or disputing infringements," Mr Rynehart said.

"Having easy online access to images at their fingertips will help drivers review their journey and decide what action to take."

Drivers wanting to access the images should visit www.act.gov.au/speedcameraimage and type in their vehicle registration number and unique image identification number, which are both printed on infringement notices.

Images will remain available for one year from the date of the offence.

"Not only does the new system have the functionality that allows clients to view camera images of offences online, it also provides clearer images and automatically checks for stolen vehicle and interstate number plates," Mr Rynehart said.
