I've had a "Tips not Included" sign in the back of my car for a long time now and not only does it spark conversation but I regularly get tips from $3 to $20 with $5 being the average. Now that you can tip in the app, all I get are $1 and $2 tips.
There is a psychological aspect to tipping in person and having eye contact with your driver that prompts passengers to give a decent tip. Done after the fact, it's just too easy and anonymous to be a cheapskate.
What needed to be changed was the false narrative that tips were included in the fare - that's all. I've had passengers in the past actually ask me to stop at an ATM so that they can leave a tip. If anything, the tipping options should be $5, $10, $20 and OTHER
