In App tipping a very bad idea

I've had a "Tips not Included" sign in the back of my car for a long time now and not only does it spark conversation but I regularly get tips from $3 to $20 with $5 being the average. Now that you can tip in the app, all I get are $1 and $2 tips.

There is a psychological aspect to tipping in person and having eye contact with your driver that prompts passengers to give a decent tip. Done after the fact, it's just too easy and anonymous to be a cheapskate.

What needed to be changed was the false narrative that tips were included in the fare - that's all. I've had passengers in the past actually ask me to stop at an ATM so that they can leave a tip. People are generous when the pleasant ride, good music and nice conversation are fresh in their minds and tipping is a live person to person transaction. In app tipping invites people to be cheap.

If anything, the tipping options should be $5, $10, $20 and OTHER

I agree with YOU. SOME PEOPLE begged for this, this was going to a WORLD CHANGING EVENT..... this may help some and I am happy for them. It won't mean S*it for others and I feel for them too. :)

Plus adding the TIP option lets UBER (claim) to the world that they are NOT the A**holes everyone says they are...LOL

Higher rates mean more money for all on every ride and we would still be cheaper and a better service than a CAB. Short-sidedness has brought many a kingdom.

The best deal for the Driver's would be for UBER to raise rates and to HELL with the whole tipping issue. Cheap PAX's don't tip anyway but all PAX's have to Pay to Ride. This will never sink in but.......

This is ridiculous.

Uber had a policy of discouraging tips and leading pox to believe that they were somehow included.

This 180-degree turnaround is a good thing no matter how you slice it.
Of course it would be better to get cash tips and if we were in a cash business we would see a lot more cash tips. But this is not a cash business and the excuse many of the pox use is that they no longer carry cash.
Well they can't use that excuse anymore and they can't use the excuse that they thought a tip was included.

If someone wants to tip you in cash they are still going to tip you in cash.

I had a repeat passenger the other night. When I took her the first time she did not tip me. When I picked her up on Saturday evening she included a $5 tip in the app. That's $5 more than I would have gotten.

So quit complaining about Uber adding tips to the app. It is a net positive for drivers.

I actually agree with this guy for once....

I believe it is because a majority of food shoppers choose the store most convent to where they live. I know I surely did and still do. I was a long time Pathmark shopper, over 35 years, with shoprite so little further away but learning a new store was not worth the hassle. Now that Pathmark is gone I had no choice but to learn that store but will not shop in other shoprite stores because they are laid out differently. Wegmans opens this weekend nearby but do not plan to shop there.
Laid out differently???? OMG you are either the laziest sob or just clueless.....

I've gotten in-app tips every day since it started EXCEPT today, the day Über is matching them.
I had 2 today.... one app for $2=$4 and one cash for $5 and I felt like asking the guy to take it back and to tip through the app lol

Did about a half dozen rides since this morning. I know they have 24hrs from end of trip to tip but nothing as of yet. Even had a long convo about tips being added to the app with last pax I drove around noon. Still nothing as of 3pm...

The amount of fares that tip has gone up signifigantly for me..so I'm not complaining about the tipping at all.. and if Uber would raise the rates in the rest of NJ to match the shore rates, the number of pax that would jump ship to Lyft would be negligible (in my opinion). People that use Uber consistently will continue to use it. Most pax have no idea what the rates are. I get at least 5 Uber pings for every 1 Lyft ping.. (and I'm being conservative). Raise the rates and everyone wins... Uber gets more revenue (which it DESPERATELY needs), drivers make more money, service level to pax most likely gets better..and it would probably still surge too..

It's not a matter or passengers noticing or not. They are already paying more with upfront pricing. It's just a willing to pay more from both Uber and Lyft. Many don't want to understand than paxes are no longer paying a per actual mileage/time fare but whatever quoted price given when requesting the ride. They can even be paying a 2x, 3x fare but if Uber/Lyft find an ant ready to take the minimum rate they'll pocket the difference. So, I agree, raising the payout for drivers will be mostly unnoticeable for riders. In the long term both companies would make more because there would be more ants by definition accepting more base rate trips.. but then.. there are so many ants now that they don't have any urge to do it.

Uber HAS raised the rates, probably to shore rates, they're just not paying them to us. Look at what the customers pay, they're paying 1.8 on anything over 5 miles
