  • Hi Scrurbscrud! My name is Noopur Raval. I am a PhD student at UC Irvine in California. I study Uber/Lyft drivers and interview them to understand what problems they face. I have spoken to chi1cabby before, just so you know I don't mean any harm :smiles: I'd love to interview you. Please drop me a message if you like :smiles: Thanks! (email: [email protected])
    Hi chicabby!
I was wondering if you could recommend the best place to find all the tips and tricks I need to know to maximize my earnings? THX

Check with your personal auto insurance carrier to see if your personal auto policy is valid. Most have a livery exclusion which technically may void the policy.

If you get a bing and are on the way to pick up the passenger or have a passenger in the car you are covered by Ubers policy. If you were sitting and waiting for a bing and you were sideswiped that would fall on your personal insurance. But be aware when you are covered by Uber the deductible is an outrageous 1000 dollars so that ride was a huge loss for you.
IT clearly states " Starting today, if a driver’s personal insurance policy is found not to cover an accident during this period, this new policy will provide contingent coverage for a driver’s liability at the highest requirement of any state in the U.S: $50,000/individual/incident for bodily injury, $100,000 total/incident for bodily injury and $25,000/incident for property damage."
No adequate insuance might be just as good as expired insurance when you drive for them. I am surprised courts and government still allow this ambiguity and allow Uber to continue UberX in the US. No wonder if it is not in Canada and Germany was banning Uber. Unless you are misinformed, did you read print about their new contingent liability insurance?

Regulatory issues and insurance issues almost always LAG new legislation. That's just the way it is. Again, if you read the fine print in the legislation it even addresses these kinds of lags and potential gaps as the system struggles to catch up. Legislation can not force the insurance companies to do anything. You will end up paying about $4-5 grand a year for a legit policy.
They still ask for copy of your insurance before they sign you up, they won't if if its expired and if they know no US personal insurance policy covers it while pretending most do and only some don't then who is a dolt.
So I guess 99% of uberX drivers are screwed because they don't do sufficient homework before they sign up and rely on Uber claims that are simply under-disclosed.

It's just no Uber's job. Their fine print if you read it says that it's your job to adequately insure and you already agreed to DO THAT.

Uber not only figured out a way to pay less than minimum wage but has also figured out a way to avoid auto insurance liability for it's drivers? Am I reading this correctly?

Call your insurance company you'll more than likely find out your personal auto policy is voided by participation in ride share. I did. Found out I was driving technically uninsured because I had violated the terms and conditions of my policy. It's considered by insurance companies to be commercial livery activity, a big NO NO.
