Thats crazy ive seen it that high once and ive been doing this for a year.
If uber would actually pay its drivers then they shouldnt have to raise it that high. Its always that debate the customers want lower prices and drivers want higher pay.
Alot of people would wait for it to lower. Noone wins

Surge was a joke over the New Year in my home city (Newcastle UK) at 12.30am the surge went to 5.2 x and it was pissing down with rain, but punters were walking home rather than pay that. got my first job at 2.37am. waste of F*****g time. Should have been 1.5x with a max of 2x and everyone wins, riders, drivers, Uber. Greedy bastards I hope they go down the pan soon.

Actually it got to 8.8 x @ 12:33 am in Cronulla area (30klms/18miles) south suburb of Sydney.
Many drivers expected the CBD to have massive surges.:(
